OFFICIAL GUIDELINES RULES AND REGULATIONS

The following is a complete list of the official rules and regulations for the Hoops Classic. All players are responsible for knowing the rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable tournament.

1. Teams should be at their assigned court ten minutes before the start of the game. All players on a team should wear the same color shirts. All players must wear identification bracelets in order to play. No roster changes are allowed after your first game.

2. A team must have three players to begin any game. If a team does not have the minimum number of players on the court at the scheduled starting time, they will automatically forfeit the game. There will be absolutely no excuses for late starts due to the unavailability of players.

3. Games are played to 16 points by one point baskets or to a 25 minute time limit, whichever occurs first. A team needs to win by one point only.

4. Dead ball situations stop the clock only during the last minute of play.

5. Shots made from beyond the 19 feet 9 inch borderline will count as two points.

6. Play begins with a coin toss with the winner of the toss choosing offensive or defensive assignment.

7. Possession of the ball will change hands after each score.

8. Play starts from beyond the two-point line after each score.

9. The ball must be taken beyond the two-point line with all change of possession -- score, steal, defensive rebound, even an air ball. Player in possession of the ball must have both feet and the ball behind the two-point line to start an offensive play. In wheelchair games, all players must clear the two-point line on a change of possession. The ball does not need to be passed in to begin an offensive play. After a made basket/time-out, the new defensive team must check the ball before the offense begins play.

10. Substitution is permitted after a score or time-out.

11. Each team will be permitted a one minute time-out; time-outs will stop the 25 minute game clock.

12. Referees will officiate most games. In the unlikely event that a game official is not available then players call their own fouls and courtside monitors will settle all disputes.

13. Jump balls will be called by the game official/court monitor, and the ball will go to the defense.

14. Free throws will be shot on shooting fouls when the field goal is missed. Only one free throw shot will be attempted per regular shooting foul. If the free throw is made, it is worth one point and the defense obtains possession. If the free throw is missed, it is a live ball.

15. Two free throws will be shot on shooting fouls when the field goal attempt beyond the 19 foot 9 inch line is missed. Each free throw is worth one point. If the second shot is made, the defense obtains possession. If the second shot is missed, it is a live ball.

16. Referees/Court monitors will display discretionary measurement and decisions regarding a player who repeatedly commits personal fouls. It is the discretion of the referee/court monitor to disqualify that player from competition for the game and tournament. The referee/monitor must report the ejection from the tournament to the scorer’s table immediately after the game.

17. Flagrant fouls, hanging on the rim, misconduct or abusive language may result in dismissal of the player from the tournament. The referee/court monitor may call a technical foul for these situations. A dead ball technical foul shot will be awarded to the team fouled. The team captain selects the shooter for the one shot free throw. The shooting team also receives the ball out of bounds, whether or not the free throw is made.

18. Use of an unregistered player will result in automatic forfeiture of the game and dismissal of the team from the tournament.

19. In the event of a tie at the end of the 25-minute time limit, the next basket will win. The winner will evolve from a sudden death playoff with the first team to score. The play will continue from the regular time period. For instance, if a team is in possession of the ball when the time limit expires, that team will continue to maintain possession and play will resume as natural until the next basket is scored.

20. Upon completion of the game, the referee/court monitor will register the team names and score, and have both team captains sign-off on the score sheet.

21. Captains of the winning team of a game must bring the completed game form score sheet to the scorers booth.

22. Team captains must report to the scorer’s booth upon completion of their game to learn of the next game assignment and court assignment.

23. Team captains will be requested to act as court monitors for a game following their own if tournament court monitors are not available.

24. Any game protest must be filed at the scorer’s tent by the team captain within ten minutes of the completion of a game. A protest fee of $10 will be assessed and is payable at the time a protest is filed. Protest payment is refunded only when protest is upheld.

25. We reserve the right to verify any player’s age or playing experience. Inaccurate information is grounds for disqualification of the entire team. Each player is encouraged to carry personal identification.

26. Any team registering a protest regarding the age of an opposing team’s player(s), must first present proof of age for their own team.

27. Championship games may be officiated and have no time limit.

28. In divisions with round-robin play, if a tie exists for first place, the champion will be determined by head-to-head record.

29. First and second place awards will be presented in each team division approximately one hour after the final game in each bracket.

30. Dunking is not permitted at any time (pre-game or during game). A dunk during a game will result in no basket and loss of possession.

31. In officiated games only, each player is limited to 4 personal fouls per game (technical foul = personal foul). Fourth personal foul results in dismissal from the game.
